Stanwell c.1960s 83R Hand Made Sandblasted Pot Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
While seemingly quite traditional and unassuming, the 83R is in fact one of the rarer shapes in Stanwell’s history, one that has not been produced for around 50 years. It was introduced in the 1960s, as part of Stanwell’s “Giants” series, which were often identified with the “R” suffix, and was, seemingly, gone by the mid-1970s. In the case of the 83R, it is by no means a magnum, but it is an especially wide pot, with an almost inordinately proportioned bowl in relation to its slender shank. In other words, Stanwell’s Giant nomenclature has its closest Anglo-French analogs in the Comoy’s Extraordinaire or the GBD Colossus. This rendition is part of the higher-end Hand Made line (which I think was the case for all Giants, as well as a few other shapes at the time) and wears a reserved, dark sandblast—though one, I might add, with plenty of deep ring grain.
The condition is very good. Some minor wear to the rim and slight inner rim charring.
