Stanwell 1980s Hand Made 126 Smooth Horn Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

The 126 was an early shape designed for Stanwell by Tom Eltang, and was indeed such a jewel in the crown of Stanwell’s portfolio that it was reissued decades later as part of the star-studded “Legend” line. A hybrid of the Dublin and the horn (as Danes are wont to do), it was, more or less, featured twice in Stanwell’s 1980s-1990s lineup, with the shape “125” being the same, but sans the plateaux rim (as Stanwell was wont to do, especially with shapes designed by Sixten Ivarsson). This one is a beautiful example from the higher-end Hand Made line, having been cut perfectly to capture many a flare of straight grain rising and culminating at the jagged edge of the burl. Based on the style of the Stanwell crowned “S” logo on the stem, I would estimate this to be a 1980s make, and most likely early to mid-1980s, as higher-end Stanwells in that decade would later be given a much thicker, golden stem inlay.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It also comes with its original sleeve.
