Sean Reum Signature Eggshell Bent Egg Briar Pipe, New

Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.

This particular Reum is one of his recent – and highly successful – explorations of a new, signature finish, which he calls ‘Eggshell.’ I had the privilege of seeing some of the very first pipes Sean produced when testing out this finish, and the end result was definitely worth the time and effort he invested in it. Put simply, Eggshell is a very light sandblast finish, one whose appearance and feel calls to mind the surface of bird eggs. Sean then contrast stains the pipe to help elevate the blasted grain, with quite stunning results. This Eggshell-finished pipe is a bent egg – quite fitting, really – in the vein of Danish pipes from the last century, particularly those popularly associated with artisans such as Jess Chonowitsch and Tom Eltang and their designs for Stanwell. With this egg shape and Eggshell finish, Sean has paired a desert camouflage ebonite stem, which has been no less painstakingly crafted, by hand, than the stummel. On a last note, the pipe is incredibly lightweight, at a mere 36 grams, making it ideal for clenching.
