Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe makers. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.
Artisans do not typically craft many churchwarden renditions across their career. I imagine this has something to do with the more niche appeal of the shape and with just how labor-intensive hand-cutting a mouthpiece of that length is. Montana’s Sean Reum doesn’t make many churchwardens, either, though he has been known, from time to time, to take up that challenge. As is his style, these pipes tend to bring together his Scandi-American design philosophy with the churchwarden’s hallmark length, which one can see quite clearly here. The bowl is a squat, scooping apple, dressed in one of Reum’s contrast finishes, while the mouthpiece is over 7 inches of cumberland, expertly cut from rod stock.
The condition is fair. Some inner rim charring, finish fading, and chamber slightly over-reamed.
