Reum Pipes Tan Sandblasted Apple w/ Resin Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Description

Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.

While this looks to be something of an early piece from Sean Reum, it bears all the features that have come to be hallmarks of a classic Reum Pipe: an inclination toward Scandinavian forms (though without simply being derivative), a compact and lightweight stature, a more restrained sandblast finish, and a dash of color nested between its bowl and stem. The shaping is quite curious, actually, mixing together the apple and cobra shapes that are otherwise staples of Danish design, while the blasting is refreshingly light, opting for a crisp and consistent relief, rather than yet more jagged ring grain.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. I do note a few small imperfections in the briar around the underside of the shank, but they’re cosmetic, rather than a cause for practical concern. I’ve adjusted the price to reflect them in any case.
