The House of Rattray was originally a tobacconist, opening in Perth, Scotland, in 1903, under the oversight of Charles Rattray. House of Rattray soon became a blending house (whose blends are still sold to this day under the Rattray’s name) and a purveyor of Rattray-brand pipes, made for the tobacconist by established English pipe makers. Over the years, the name changed hands, with contemporary Rattray’s pipes and tobaccos being produced under the umbrella of German’s Kopp company (formerly Kolhase & Kopp). Today, Rattray’s pipes are manufactured by various major European makers, such as Chacom and Butz-Choquin in France and Brebbia and L’anatra in Italy.

The Fudge was one of a number of rather interesting Rattray’s lines a few years back, for which Rattray’s collaborated with [oc]cult-favorite British artisan Chris Kelly, of Eldritch Pipes. Kelly is known not only for his pipes, but for pipe making materials, specifically Eldritch resins, which artisans around the world use for their own pipes. It was only a matter of pipe before a major pipe company would do the same, and that company would end up being Rattray’s. True to its name, the Fudge line featured special, candy-like mouthpieces cut from a resin that Kelly blended specially for Rattray’s. This resin is somewhere between ebonite and acrylic, being softer than the latter yet more resistant to oxidation than the former. The Fudge also featured essentially naked finished bowls, which were free from flaws and which would, over time, develop a golden patina akin to their namesake.

This pipe is completely unsmoked. It is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired.
