Description

Nørding was founded by Erik Nørding in the 1960s, and is one of the oldest remaining companies to come out of the Scandinavian pipe-making renaissance that began in the mid-20th century. Now in his 80s, Erik Nørding is one of the most experienced and skilled pipe-makers in the world, and over the decades he has also been a teacher of other Danish masters, such as Poul Ilsted, Svend Axel Celius, Jens Tao Nielsen, Peder Jeppesen, and Søren Erik Andersen.

The Nørding company is now much bigger than it used to be, with many expert carvers employed making Nørding pipes and their various lines. As such, the only pipes carved exclusively by Erik Nørding today are the ‘Hand Made’ series. In the past, however, Erik had more time to carve other Nørding pipes himself. This is one example, as evinced by the nomenclature. Given that Erik is a big part of the reason that Danish freehands line this one became a thing, it’s nice – and not especially common – to find one of his own making. This one is a great reflection of Erik’s abilities when it comes to shaping a rugged, yet comfortable, freehand, and when it comes to bringing out the fantastic grain patterns in a block of briar – in this case, beautifully fine, uniform straight grain all around the bowl.

The condition is excellent. There’s maybe a hair of inner rim darkening – but that might also just be the plateau briar showing through – but otherwise this large chunk of Danish history is just as it should be.
