Description
Nørding was founded by Erik Nørding in the 1960s, and is one of the oldest remaining companies to come out of the Scandinavian pipe-making renaissance that began in the mid-20th century. Now in his 80s, Erik Nørding is one of the most experienced and skilled pipe-makers in the world, and over the decades he has also been a teacher of other Danish masters, such as Poul Ilsted, Svend Axel Celius, Jens Tao Nielsen, Peder Jeppesen, and Søren Erik Andersen.
Much like many handmade pipes today, Erik Nording’s Brown Matte freehands use contrast finishes to accentuate the grain patterns of their briar. But unlike most handmade pipes, the contrast stain applied to the Brown Matte is not a glossy sheen, but—as the name suggests—a matte effect. On the one hand, the finish still brings out the flame grain and straight grain inherent to good quality plateaux briar, but it does so in a more naturalistic manner, emphasizing that what we call “grain” is, after all, the expression of something that once lived.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. Some slight scratches around the bowl, but nothing major.
