LHS Purex Rusticated Cavalier Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates
Out of stock
Description
LHS was an American pipe company based in New York, founded by brothers Ludwig and Hugo Stern in 1911. Known for such lines as the Sterncrest, the Purex, and the Redmanol, LHS often worked with innovative and decorative materials for their pipes, crafting and applying these materials in-house. LHS lasted until approximately 1960, when the company closed for good. Today, LHS pipes and memorabilia are particularly sought after by collectors, especially those with an eye for the great early American makes.
The cavalier is not a shape one would expect from LHS, but given how diverse the company’s output was at its peak, it shouldn’t be too surprising. This one is a “true” cavalier, too, with both the mouthpiece and the base being removeable via screw-in fitments. The bowl itself is briar and, in this instance, looks to be dressed in LHS’s house “Antique” rustication, which blended rustication as conventionally conceived with elements of figural carving. All in all, it’s a very unique pipe.
The condition is fair. Some wear to the rim, including some darkening and a couple of small scratches.
