Kaywoodie Pre-1955 Super Grain 96 Smooth Prince Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates
Out of stock
Description
One might say that Kaywoodie pipes are as American as apple pie. Starting in 1919 as a pipe brand for KB&B, a pipe shop dating all the way back to 1851, Kaywoodie has since then been a staple of American-made pipes. In the present, many Kaywoodies are collectors’ items, in addition to being fantastic smokers.
The Super Grain was a mainstay in Kaywoodie’s catalog from the early 1930s right until the end of the end of the make’s “American years.” They were prized pipes, with Kaywoodie proudly advertising the superiority of the aged, high-grade briar used in their production. This one is rendered in a classic Kaywoodie shape and, of course, a classic shape across Anglo-French briar pipes: the prince, or, as Kaywoodie referred to it, the “Prince of Wales.” The “96” “Prince of Wales” was introduced all the way back in the 1930s and remained in Kaywoodie’s catalog up until production was moved out of the US in the late 20th century. Based on the nomenclature and four-hole stinger, I would estimate this Super Grain to have been made prior to 1955, back when KB&B owned the make.
The condition is very good. Minor inner rim charring and chamber slightly over-reamed at the lip.
