Description
Kaywoodie pipes are as American as apple pie. Starting in 1919 as a pipe brand for KB&B, a pipe shop dating all the way back to 1851, Kaywoodie has since then been a staple of American-made pipes. In the present, many Kaywoodies are collectors’ items, in addition to being fantastic smokers.
As is the case with many historic pipe brands, Kaywoodies have a sizeable collectors market, with older pieces holding a special place within that market. A difficulty arises, however, when one takes into account that unlike, for example, most Dunhill pipes, most Kaywoodies are not stamped with a year of manufacture. Instead, one has to rely on other cues to narrow down a timeframe for the latter. A four-digit shape code, for example, indicates the pipe was made prior to 1936. The presence of a four-hole Drinkless stinger and Synchro-Stem screw fitment (sans a “patent applied for” stamp) indicates the pipe was made after 1924 and 1932 respectively, as these were the years that the former and latter had their patents approved. Thus, in this instance, we find ourselves in the rare situation of being able to isolate the timeframe in which this Kaywoodie was produced to between 1932 and 1936. As Richard Hacker has noted, the 1920s and 1930s were the decades that made Kaywoodie such a giant in the pipe world, in part owing to their superior briar. Looking at this long, lightweight, slightly brandy-ish billiard, one can plainly see that being the case.
The condition is very good, especially for a nearly 100 year old pipe. Some darkening and wear to the inner rim, and slight finish fading.
