Description

Founded by Oldrich Jirsa in 1994, Jirsa is not especially well known in the United States, but in Europe, the company has been a mainstay in the pipe world for decades. In fact, Oldrich himself can count himself among the few pipe makers so renowned in the European market that, like Poul Ilsted, Erik Nording, Hans “Former” Nielsen, Rainer Barbi, Les Wood, and Poul Winslow, there is a whole line of pipe tobaccos named in his honor, made by Dan Pipe. Jirsa’s designs are highly versatile, taking cues from Anglo-French, Danish, and German styles while also having an identity of their own.

In the case of this Jirsa, there’s a clear Danish influence, though one that takes some of the designs of the Danish movement and pushes them even further than is typical. The shape is more or less a cobra, though one whose signature “hood” has been broadened at the bowl’s front, before being “furled” in at the shank end. In a way, it’s even more “cobra” than the Danish cobra, and uses this property to its fullest advantage in terms of maximizing space to show off grain patterns. The accent is also a nice touch—acrylic, but in hues that are almost mineral, or amber-like.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired.
