Il Ceppo Partially Sandblasted Horn Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

Description

Il Ceppo is an Italian brand that has been producing high-grade pipes since the 1970s. Founded by the architect Giorgio Imperatori in Pesaro, Italy, Il Ceppo is a central figure in what has been called the Pesaro School of pipe design, along with other companies such as Ser Jacopo and Mastro de Paja.

While the Il Ceppo workshop has certainly embodied many of the defining traits of the Pesaro School across its long history, it has also not been afraid to push boundaries when it comes to incorporating aspects of pipe making from other lineages. The modest, black and tan color palette of this pipe, for example, is very “Pesaro,” yet its shaping is comparatively very leftfield. After all, it is a freehand horn shape, reminiscent of Danish freehands, but it also has a distinct stoutness that keeps it from being derivative. It also incorporates deep, craggy, ring grain sandblasting more akin to English (such as that of Ashton) or American (such as that of J.T. Cooke or Lee Von Erck) pipe making. One might say that—if you’ll excuse the pun—it is Pesaro with a twist.

The condition is very good. Minor inner rim darkening and a few slight scratches on the pipe’s smooth sections.
