HS Studio Sandblasted Blowfish w/ Boxwood Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked
Out of stock
Description
If you’ve been keeping up with the world of Chinese pipe making, their artisan scene has been really taking off over the last decade. Like the great Danish institutions of old, many of these pipes are produced in artisan workshops such as Zhiputang, Qi Studio, and GH Zhang. Hong Kong’s HS Studio follows a similar model, with a team of expert in-house carvers crafting high-quality briars in a variety of styles.
There is something quite familiar about this highly distinctive, full bent blowfish from HS Studio, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. I think it may have been a pipe from a Japanese pipe maker, such as Gotoh, or Tokutomi, which then make this one a very nicely executed homage. That’s the rub, you see, when being an estates pipes seller. No matter how good your memory is, something always slips through the cracks. Oh well, it’s a great looking pipe whatever the circumstances of its birth, with beautifully craggy, ring grain sandblasting and an expertly cut, furling boxwood inlay at the base of its ebonite stem. Perhaps someone reading this will be able to enlighten me as to where I’ve seen this kind of design before. That’s if someone doesn’t buy it first, of course.
The pipe is also completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
