Dunhill 1975 Root Briar 965 Smooth Scoop Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates

Description
To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.
In the 1970s, just before it began standardizing its shape chart into the system we know today (beginning as a five-digit string, before switching to a simpler, four-digit one), Dunhill manufactured a number of shapes that were quite beyond the norm for such an established, traditional pipe company (though, of course, they were not alone in these endeavors). The 965 was one such shape, not to be confused with the English mixture of the same name. It could be called a squat apple, a scoop, a wide shank prince, or plenty of other things. While this one, from 1975, is by no means the first one I’ve seen, it is certainly rare. That, combined with the design, ensures that whenever a Dunhill 965 pipe does land on my desk, it is never without a degree of surprise.
The condition is very good. Some slight wear to the rim.
