Description
To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.
Being an eminently traditional pipe manufacturer, Dunhill’s pipes tend to be smaller than their modern contemporaries, in part because Dunhill keeps to much of the same design philosophy that it held over 100 years ago. Nevertheless, the “305” is a curious little pipe. The shape first in Dunhill’s catalogs as early as the 1930s, marketed to be used “for sport” (presumably of the more leisurely, slow-paced variety). At under 4 inches in length, it was an early example of what pipe smokers have come to affectionately know as a “nosewarmer,” or perhaps a “moustache burner” if you’re so inclined. This Tanshell rendition comes from 1968, at the tail end of Dunhill’s oil-cured golden years, having developed a lovely warm patina n the decades since.
The condition is good. Chamber slightly over-reamed and some finish fading on the bowl.
