Description
To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.
The Liverpool is a shape that has long been overshadowed by its long shank siblings, the Lovat, the Canadian, and, perhaps to a slightly lesser extent, the lumberman. But it is a genuine classic, having been in Dunhill’s catalogs for around 50 years between the 1920s and 1970s. On the other hand, Liverpools, it seems, are a little difficult to get right, which may explain why Dunhill produced so few of them—both in terms of discrete Liverpool renditions and indeed the number of these renditions manufactured. During the 1960s, when this one was made, the shape 33 had been separated from Dunhill’s standard output and placed in the “Collectors’ Range,” so named because the resources required to produce them resulted in fewer being manufactured then their standard-shaped counterparts (which, in turn, led to higher prices for Collectors’ Range pipes). They were, still, manufactured, of course. Overshadowed or not, you can’t keep a good shape down.
The condition is very good. Some rim darkening.
