Dunhill 1960 Shell Briar ODA 845 XL Sandblasted Canadian Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates
Out of stock
Description
To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.
Around the mid-century, Dunhill formalized their “OD” series into a set of distinct shapes, each with a three-digit shape code. There were pipes that were, with the Anglo-French tradition, of unconventional design; there were pipes that were, for the time, of unconventionally large size; and there were shapes that could be considered a little of both. The 845 Canadian was one of several long shank shapes within the OD series, with its most prominent, defining attributes being that it was inordinately long (even for a Canadian) and had an inordinately tall bowl. In other words, it was something of a lengthy stacked Canadian, though as with Dunhill pipes in general, it was impressively lightweight for its size. This one is dressed in the make’s renowned Shell Briar finish and, since it’s a 1960 make, it will have been oil cured prior to sandblasting, which appears to have stopped toward the end of that decade.
The condition is fair. Some rim darkening and charring, and general finish fading.
