Comoy’s Castleton 215 Oom Paul Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates [SOLD OUT]
Out of stock
Description
Comoy’s is a historic brand in pipe making, and possibly the most historic brand in the making of briar pipes. Though originally founded in 1825 by a French family from Saint Claude, France, production of Comoy’s pipes was soon moved to London, England, where it established itself as one of the quintessential English pipe companies.
At first, I thought this was going to be a post-Cadogan pipe, i.e., a pipe made after the merger of Comoy’s with Cadogan Investments in 1980. But, lo and behold, despite having its logo set into a perspex, rather than vulcanite, stem, the famous ‘three part C’ of pre-Cadogan pipes is indeed right there on the stem (see photos)! I’ve handled thousands of pipes, even if just counting ones from England, by now, but this is the first Castleton I’ve had a chance to hold for myself. It’s a beautiful design; the perspex stem recalls GBD’s renowned use of the material, but the tiger-stripe contrast stain is very much Comoy’s fare.
The condition is great, too. The inner rim shows some darkening, but the rest of the finish, as well as the perspex stem, has held up remarkably well. The nomenclature is a little faint in some areas, but it remains perfectly readable.
