Description
Chacom is one of France’s most historic and iconic makes. Its founders, the Comoy family, began their career as boxwood pipe-makers in the early 1800s, before briar had even been discovered, with Henri Comoy (of Comoy’s fame) emigrating to England in 1879 and founding the country’s first briar pipe factory. In 1922, Henri and his nephews, the Chapuis, founded the Chapuis Comoy pipe factory in Saint-Claude, France, which shortly after began producing pipes bearing the partnered families’ names – ‘Cha’ for Chapuis, and ‘Com’ for Comoy. Chacom has been the biggest name in French pipes ever since.
Something a little less well known about the eminently French make Chacom is its connection to Danish pipe making. In more recent years, Chacom has, of course, partnered with Tom Eltang to produce the Anton and Oscar models for Chacom’s catalog. But the connection is far older. Chapuis-Comoy has, over the decades, manufactured pipes for many brands that were originally made in Denmark. But it also had shapes designed for its own catalog by popular Danish pipe makers back during the Danish pipe boom of the mid- to late 20th century, including the venerable WO Larsen workshop. This bent billiard certainly has a Danish tinge to it, evoking the “swan” shapes of WO Larsen alum Sven Knudsen, as well as Stanwell’s 02, by Sixten Ivarsson. Whether this gorgeously grained Havane model is one of the shapes designed for Chacom by the Danes, or whether it came from old stummels from Chacom’s time manufacturing for Danish companies is difficult to know. But it is certainly a distinctive, impressive specimen of a pipe, and even has a hand-cut cumberland stem—something typically accorded only to Chacom’s high-grade output.
It is also completely unsmoked. The pipe features a threaded stinger which can be attached or removed as per the owner’s preference.
