Description
With its origins in an 1858 collaboration between Jean-Baptiste Choquin and Gustave Butz, Butz-Choquin ultimately become one of the premier smoking pipe companies in 20th century France. The brand is known both for its stylish variations on traditional English-French shapes and for its exploration of atypical and elaborate finishes. The brand is also known for its collaborations with celebrated French pipe-makers, such as Paul Lanier and Alain Albuisson, who made some of Butz-Choquin’s highest-grade pipes for the company.
Given that jubilé is French for “jubilee,” I would suspect that this particular Butz-Choquin was produced to mark a special year in the make’s history. My money would be on 2008, which would have been 150 years after Butz-Choquin’s founding. The design is curiously Danish, though Butz-Choquin, over its long history, has been quick to keep up with times and trends. Taking the form of a panel shank Dublin, with an ivory-like ferrule and slightly flared stem, it is very much in keeping with Butz-Choquin’s style in the early 20th century, while also simply being a very good looking piece.
The condition is good. Some inner rim darkening, a couple of scratches on the shank, and a slightly worn out mortise, though the stem fits snug and without issue.
