Butz Choquin Fait Main 1333 Smooth Brandy Estate Briar Pipe, French Estates

With its origins in an 1858 collaboration between Jean-Baptiste Choquin and Gustave Butz, Butz-Choquin ultimately become one of the premier smoking pipe companies in 20th century France. The brand is known both for its stylish variations on traditional English-French shapes and for its exploration of atypical and elaborate finishes. The brand is also known for its collaborations with celebrated French pipe-makers, such as Paul Lanier and Alain Albuisson, who made some of Butz-Choquin’s highest-grade pipes for the company.  

While Butz-Choquin is largely known for its high-quality factory briars, the company also offered premium handmade pipes too. Often these were sold via the Maître-Pipier series, though not always. This tall bent brandy is one example of a handmade (“fait main“) Butz-Choquin in a far more traditional mold to the Maître-Pipiers, though this hasn’t stopped it from bearing exquisite bird’s-eye grain. A nice, extra touch is the stem, which features a sanguine, offset inlay.

The condition is excellent. I’m not sure if the pipe has been smoked, but I will err on the side of presuming it is (though very gently if so), and price it as such.
