Description
With its origins in an 1858 collaboration between Jean-Baptiste Choquin and Gustave Butz, Butz-Choquin ultimately become one of the premier smoking pipe companies in 20th century France. The brand is known both for its stylish variations on traditional English-French shapes and for its exploration of atypical and elaborate finishes. The brand is also known for its collaborations with celebrated French pipe-makers, such as Paul Lanier and Alain Albuisson, who made some of Butz-Choquin’s highest-grade pipes for the company.
The Brasilia line was something of a throwback by Butz-Choquin, one that recalled its roots in early French briar pipes and the other materials traditionally used in their manufacture. In this instance, the other material present was horn, which was once a staple for pipe mouthpieces (and indeed is still used by some French makes, such as Genod and Ropp), and which was put to use once more for the Brasilia line. This one is a beautifully grained bent billiard, much like the bent billiards that will have been made in the 19th century, with its golden brown finish offset by the lighter hues of its horn mouthpiece.
The condition is good. Some rim darkening and a few small scratches on the bowl.
