Description
Ben Wade was founded, as might be expected, by Leeds-based English pipe merchant Benjamin Wade in 1860. Soon after, Wade opened his own workshop to produce quintessentially British pipes. As one of the first makes to create pipes from briar, Ben Wade has a special place in pipe history, one only made more special by the famously high-quality of their output.
The Ben Wade make changed hands a number of times over the course of the 20th century and, as a result, several different companies manufactured Ben Wade pipes. Charatan and Preben Holm, for example, are two of the most well-known names when it comes to Ben Wade pipes. But there were others, including pipe makers like Holm who were contracted to produce Ben Wade pipes on the behalf of another company. London Meerschaum and its Jambo line was one of these contracted parties. As the company used African meerschaum, their pipes were typically pre-colored, including via fumed finishes such as seen here. Due to political conflicts in the regions where African meerschaum was mined, however, it has not been used in meerschaum manufacture for many decades.
The condition is very good. Some scratches on the rim.
