1930s Kaywoodie Drinkless 8729, Smooth Straight Billiard Briar Pipe, 4 Hole Stinger [SOLD OUT]

Kaywoodie pipes are as American as apple pie. Starting in 1919 as a pipe brand for KB&B, a pipe shop dating all the way back to 1851, Kaywoodie has since then been a staple of American-made pipes. In the present, many Kaywoodies are collectors items, in addition to being fantastic smokers.

This particular Kaywoodie looks to be rather old. The ‘Drinkless’ was a patented stinger system, introduced in 1924, that prevented moisture and excess heat from travelling up the pipe while it was being smoked. In the 1930s, the Drinkless stinger system was changed from a push tenon to a screw in tenon, which this pipe has. The stinger is also of the four hole variety, and the pipe has a four digit shape code (8729). Though dating Kaywoodies is not a science, the factors mentioned, along with the use of the ‘Aged Bruyere’ stamping, leads me to estimate that the pipe is from some time between 1936 and 1938. So, this pipe seems to be nearly a century old.

While the rim is ever so slightly out of round and ever so slightly darkened, the condition of this historic Kaywoodie is quite remarkable. I imagine the next owner will be quite pleased – whether they end up smoking it, or framing it!
