HS Studio Sandblasted Blowfish w/Boxwood Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

If you’ve been keeping up with the world of Chinese pipe making, their artisan scene has been really taking off over the last decade. Like the great Danish institutions of old, many of these pipes are produced in artisan workshops such as Zhiputang, Qi Studio, and GH Zhang. Hong Kong’s HS Studio follows a similar model, with a team of expert in-house carvers crafting high-quality briars in a variety of styles.

While the blowfish was originally a far more vertical design, defined by its two distinctly flat sides, it soon evolved (or, perhaps, simply pumped up) into a far broader, rounder figure by way of Lars Ivarsson and other like-minded artisans. Thanks to Ivarsson and co, the blowfish has become a wide genre of shapes, from the boxy to the bulbous. This one, from the artisans at HS Studio, falls into the latter camp, with an egg-like bowl juxtaposed with a teardrop shank. The finish is a reserved, crisp black sandblast, paired with a similarly black ebonite stem, though the two are offset very nicely by way of a much lighter boxwood ferrule.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
