Description
If you’ve been keeping up with the world of Chinese pipe making, their artisan scene has been really taking off over the last decade. Like the great Danish institutions of old, many of these pipes are produced in artisan workshops such as Zhiputang, Qi Studio, and GH Zhang. Hong Kong’s HS Studio follows a similar model, with a team of expert in-house carvers crafting high-quality briars in a variety of styles.
Not unlike some of our MBSD Silver line meerschaums, this highly distinctive briar from HS Studio features a reverse calabash system. Using a widened bore and a conically-inclined tenon, it provides a space for smoke to cool and dry a little more as it makes its way through the bowl and stem. The shaping is a little more adventurous than our meers, I’ll admit (though maybe not for long), and it’s beautifully executed at that. There’s a little contemporary Danish to it, such as one finds in the pipes of Lasse Skovgaard, but also what looks to be a little Japanese influence, especially at the rim, not unlike the pipes of, say Takeo Arita. What’s perhaps most impressive, though, is the sandblast finishing, which shows off a good amount of ring grain for such an intricate shape.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original sleeve.
