Description

Bari was a pipe company founded in Kolding, Denmark, in 1950. Along with Stanwell, Bari was one of the first companies that started the Danish movement in pipe-making, offering innovative designs and propelling its founders and carvers into celebrity status within the pipe world. Bari’s founder was Viggo Nielsen, whose sons Kai Nielsen and Jørgen Nielsen joined him in working at Bari, along with other soon-to-be famous names such as Age Bogelund. Though the Bari company is long gone, its legacy lives on in the artisan pipe scene as it exists today.

Though it has seen better days, there’s still plenty to love about this old Bari. Not least is the way it captures a certain moment, near the beginnings of post-war Danish pipes, when shapes were novel and unique without being completely separated from their traditional counterparts. This distinctive pickaxe shape, with its tall, deep chamber and fantail stem, will most certainly have been a top of the line Bari pipe at one point in time, and I don’t doubt that it will have cost a similarly high sum. True to its name, the grain is spectacular, and it is a genuine featherweight, as early Danish designs tended to be.

The condition is fair. Darkening and some charring on the rim, and general handling marks on the bowl.
