Bjarne Nielsen was one of the towering figures of Danish pipe making until his passing in 2008. As the founder of Bjarne, Nielsen employed talented pipe-makers from Denmark to produce distinctly Danish pipes and sold them to a devoted international audience. Among those in his employ were figures such as Mogens Johansen (also known as Johs), Ph. Vigen, Ole Bandholm and Tonni Nielsen. Though Bjarne pipes are no longer manufactured, they are still in good demand by those who enjoy well-made pipes in the tradition of Danish design.

Given that Bjarne Nielsen had such a star-studded roster of pipe makers under his employ, it’s not surprising that the Bjarne make achieved the heights that it did. Here was a man who knew both how to make pipes and how to run a pipe business, while also possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of brands and artisans in the craft. This very Danish bent apple is a great example of a pipe from a man who knew what the market wanted and the quality it expected. Slightly squat, with the signature plumpness of Scandinavian design, it positively glows thanks to its wealth of flame grain and the contrast stain accentuating it. One interesting addition to this Bjarne, that I’ve not encountered before, is an Ivorite (or Elforyn, as it’s known in Europe) accent at the base of the stem, adding another layer of contrast between the bowl’s swirling hues on one side, and the classic jet-black flared mouthpiece on the other.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating, having come from a batch of new old stock pipes from a shop closure in Europe. It is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired.
