Description

Along with Suhr’s Pibemageri and W.O. Larsen, H. Dan Christensen’s Pibe-Dan (later known as Pipe Dan) was one of the crucible of post-war Danish pipe making, in which many of Scandinavia’s most important artisans worked and trained. Among Pibe-Dan alumni included Gert Holbek, Ib Loran, Sven Knudsen Ph. Vigen, Per Holtorp, Poul Hansen, and Tom Eltang, with other legendary Scandinavian pipe makers selling their work through the shop, such as Sixten Ivarsson.

Pibe-Dan introduced many notable designs to the brave new world of post-war pipe making but, arguably, the most famous designs associated with the shop belonged to the Dan Shape Reformed series. Pipe-Dan’s owner, Christensen, certainly thought so, with one such shape being the logo for the shop.
The basic design objective for the Dan Shapes was simple: to have a pipe whose chamber was always upright when being smoked, including when clenched. This was combined with a tall, narrow chamber (around just 15mm) that smoked cooler, for longer, and which was much easier to finish off when one got to the last dottle at its base. As indicated, Pibe-Dan offered a whole genre of Dan Shapes, some being more vase-like, some being closer to traditional Anglo-French shapes, and some which were almost absurdly tall. This particular Dan Shape would be the latter. Referred to as the Dan Shape Reformed “Chimney,” or “Full Chimney,” which was the tallest of the Dan Shapes, boasting a chamber depth of nearly 3 inches. While some Dan Shapes were machine-made, the Chimney was one that had to be hand-turned and which was, understandably, quite a few more kroner than a more standard variation. Pibe-Dan even advertised it as “The Pipe-shape that made pipe-history,” which it would be difficult to argue against, especially in the 1950s.

The condition is very good. Some rim charring and slight residual oxidation on the pipe’s vulcanite stem.
