Description

As with other forms of art and craft, pipe making has a curious tendency to “run in the family.” Denmark, of course, is famous for its pipe making dynasties, such as the successive generations of Ivarsson, Chonowitsch, and Balleby pipes. The same holds for the Morel family in France and the Blatter family in Canada. There are also instances where siblings make pipes together, such as in the cases of Blatter Bros and Vollmer & Nilsson. And there are also examples where two or more siblings from the same family will make pipes individually, as Sven Knudsen and Teddy Knudsen did before and after their brief Dantonian partnership.

This latter example is most apt to describe three brothers from Indonesia with seemingly genetic talents for pipe making: Wandi Riyadi, Md. Anggi, and Md. Angga. While Anggi and Angga have learned plenty from their trailblazing brother Riyadi over the years, they’ve also managed to step out of their brother’s increasingly large shadow and to carve their own, individual paths.

For this pipe, Anggi, better known as G Pipes, has crafted a distinctly modern, faceted, Dublin. With its stubby proportions and abundance of flattened planes, one might think of it as what would happen if you’d cross the pipes of Roman “Doctor’s” Kovalev and Poul Ilsted.
