Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Though long discontinued, Stanwell’s Nordic line was quite uncommon within the Danish make’s historical catalog. This is because—for a time, at least—Nordic pipes had the option of having either black ebonite or cumberland ebonite stems. From its founding until the mid-1990s, Stanwell used black ebonite as standard, with only a few exceptions, such as the 1980s Hand Cut series (not to be confused with the 1950s Hand Cut series) and the 1942-1992 Jubilee (Danish: Jubilaeum) series that marked Stanwell’s 50th anniversary. Nordic pipes like this one, which has the aforementioned cumberland stem, are something of a rarity, especially after Stanwell’s transition to only using acrylic stems in the late 1990s.
Even without the cumberland, this is a fantastic pipe, being an iteration of the highly distinct (and, sadly, currently discontinued) shape “204” panel horn, designed for Stanwell by Tom Eltang.
The condition is very good. Some wear to the inner rim and minor finish fading.
