Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
While Peterson’s Emerald line is one that can still be found at a few retailers, this Emerald is not the same as one can purchase today. As ever, Mark Irwin’s Peterson Pipe Notes is a good go-to for information on it. As Irwin has documented, while the Emerald debuted in the late 1980s, and while it was then—as it is today—offered exclusively in a rusticated finish, there was a brief window in the 1990s where a smooth iteration was produced. Irwin’s research points to an approximately 5-year period between 1992 and 1997 when the Emerald smooth finish appeared in catalogs, making this one a very interesting find for fans of Peterson’s more uncommon modern pieces.
The condition is very good. Some slight inner rim charring and a couple of small, superficial scratches on the bowl.
