HS Studio Smooth Reverse Calabash Horn Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

If you’ve been keeping up with the world of Chinese pipe making, their artisan scene has been really taking off over the last decade. Like the great Danish institutions of old, many of these pipes are produced in artisan workshops such as Zhiputang, Qi Studio, and GH Zhang. Hong Kong’s HS Studio follows a similar model, with a team of expert in-house carvers crafting high-quality briars in a variety of styles.

Not unlike some of our MBSD Silver line meerschaums, this highly distinctive briar from HS Studio features a reverse calabash system. Using a widened bore and a conically-inclined tenon, it provides a space for smoke to cool and dry a little more as it makes its way through the bowl and stem. As with another HS Studio we had a while back, this one is highly adventurous in its shaping, recalling the kinds of forms you’d find in pipes from, say, Danish pipe makers like Lasse Skovgaard, or Japanese ones like Takeo Arita. The grain is also especially nice, with ultra-fine straight grain running up its horn-like figure.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
