Moonlight Pipes “Sprouting Seed” Handmade Briar Pipe, New

Description
While some pipe-makers take inspiration from the natural world, or from the technologies of present and past, few of them in the contemporary seek to represent these forms in their work. Czech artisan Ondrej Bárta of Moonlight pipes does just that, in a way that recalls the intricate, figural carvings of briar pipes from the turn of the 20th century. But Ondrej also departs from the figural approach of early briar pipes by combining it with high-grade materials and a careful attention to grain patterns that is far more modern.
Ondrej Bárta is renowned for his sitter shapes, not least because of how eye catching they are when left to their own devices. This “Sprouting Seed” work from Bárta takes cues from the classical Oom Paul, the winding figures of modern artisan staples, such as the ballerina and the acorn, and the figural tradition, with the result being a fascinating smoker. As the name suggests, it evokes those first, germinal stages of pips and stones, setting forth shoots up out of the earth and toward the sun. But, it is not simply a sculpture: it is, like all of Bárta’s creations, intended to be smoked, which it will do well. As the pipe does exhibit a drastic, sweeping curvature, a small plug has been incorporated at the base of the shank to facilitate easy cleaning and maintenance.
