Description
WO Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe-making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans ‘Former’ Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen.
If my dating is correct, this WO Larsen should be from the early to mid-1960s, as it has the older “LARSEN COPENHAGEN” nomenclature, rather than the later “W.Ø. LARSEN” one. And, if my Danish pipes history serves me well, this should also be one of the workshop’s most famous designs of that period: the “115” paneled horn sitter hybrid (I suppose the case could also be made that it’s a paneled yachtsman), designed by then-foreman Sven Knudsen. Closely related to the iconic “Oliphant” shapes of Sixten Ivarsson and Bo Nordh, the 115 was nonetheless very much its own thing, while also being far easier to actually put to use. This extra large rendition attained a Super grade, no doubt due to the magnificent bird’s-eye and cross grain patterns it exhibits.
The condition is very good. Some wear to the rim and slight handling marks.
