WO Larsen Super Smooth Diamond Shank Apple Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates
Out of stock
Description
W.O. Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe-making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans ‘Former’ Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen.
Based on the nomenclature, this looks to be a relatively early pipe from the W.O. Larsen workshop, back during the early 1960s when Sven Knudsen was its foreman. As with a number of W.O. Larsen pipes from that period, it has an interesting mix of traditional and modern elements, and features some of the hallmark paneling (here in the form of a diamond shank) of both Knudsen’s own designs, and those he created for W.O. Larsen. The bird’s-eye grain is especially nice on this one, which is presumably why it also attained a “Super” grade.
The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening and handling marks.
