Uhle’s XL Smooth Freehand w/ Vulcanite Mount Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates
Out of stock
Description
Uhle’s is one of Milwaukee’s oldest tobacconists, having opened in 1939. Over the decades, Uhle’s has, as with many historic tobacconists, had house-brand pipes made for it by various companies and individuals. This one was made in Denmark (something quite evident even if it wasn’t stamped as such) and two candidates spring to mind. In the nomenclature, this one is also stamped with “IIS,” a make or line associated with Karl Erik and Preben Holm, two of Denmark’s most notable freehand carvers. It is, however, still debated as to which of the two IIS actually belonged to. The style and construction of this one is really distinct, even for a freehand, incorporating steps and panels while also keeping a keen eye on the briar’s straight grain. It also features a sculpted vulcanite military mount, further adding to its complexity.
The condition is very good. Some minor wear to the rim and residual oxidation on the vulcanite mount.
