Stanwell Reg Era Hand Made 47 Smooth Scoop Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

The Stanwell “47” is a shape that was, for a long time, presumed to have been designed by Anne Julie. The problem with this theory, however, is that the shape appears as early as the 1960 export catalog, at a time when Stanwell’s sole “big name” collaborator was Sixten Ivarsson. Anne Julie did not take up pipe making until after 1967, following the sudden passing of her husband, so I personally would presume it to be another Ivarsson design. As for the design itself, it is one of the archetypical “scoop” shapes of post-war pipe making; sleek, supple and slightly plump at its bowl, it has a fair amount in common with the contemporaneous Polonius designs of Gert Holbek, though the 47 is a little more “princely” in side profile. This one comes from Stanwell’s higher-end Hand Made line and, based on the presence of the trademark registration number stamp (“REGD. No. 969-48”), will have been made at some point between the late 1950s and the late 1970s (though I would err on the side of 1960-1975).

The condition is very good. Minor inner rim darkening and some handling marks.
