Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

Though it’s been out of production for around half a century now, the Stanwell shape “47” remains emblematic of the first decades of “Danish design” and, by extension, the movement that brought Stanwell into the big leagues. Created by Sixten Ivarsson, it’s a subtle, supple, scooping shape, not too far off from a traditional prince, though with the addition of an oval shank, which Ivarsson was quite partial to. Less bombastic than the “Danish” pipes that would come after it, the 47 is instead truer to the neoclassical leanings of those first, pioneering, post-war artisans.

The condition is good. Some wear to the rim, including a spot of charring, and a few superficial scratches around the bowl.
