Scandia by Stanwell 723 Sandblasted Acorn Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang. Scandia was a sub-brand for Stanwell in the mid- to late 20th century.
Stanwell’s Scandia sub-brand, as with many of its other sub-brands, often used three-digit shape codes to differentiate the pipes during production, with the first digit indicating which brand the pipe would be sold under. A pipe with a shape code such as this one, therefore, should be understood as a Scandia (“7”) brand iteration of the shape “23.” The 23 is one of Stanwell’s most recognizable shapes, despite its scarcity from being out of production for decades. Designed by none other than Sixten Ivarsson, the shape is one of his signature acorns, but with a more plump stature and easily maintained saddle stem. Despite being from a sub-brand, this 23 is very nicely finished, with a particularly craggy sandblast overlaid with a tan stain (Stanwell sometimes called this finish the “Golden Danish”).
The condition is very good. Some slight inner rim charring and finish fading.
