Description
Pipe makers often have interesting backgrounds, though few have quite as interesting journey through life as the late Sam Learned did. Born in Seattle in 1936, Learned studied chemical engineering in college before joining the military, rising through the ranks to become both a First Lieutenant and an instructor in its Chemical Corps. After completing his service in 1964, Learned worked as an engineer, where he became interested in patents. This led to further studies, this time in law, after which Learned practiced as a patent attorney, which would be his primary career from then on.
So, where do pipes fit into all of this? Learned took up the pipe while in the military and began amassing a modest collection, though with an eye for high-grade pieces, such as those of Jorgen Larsen and Jess Chonowitsch. Another pipe maker he admired was Jim Margroum, who allowed Learned to study pipe making with him. Learned spent two days a week for one year apprenticing under Margroum, showing himself to have a considerable knack for crafting pipes. Other pipe makers Learned spent time with were Ed Burak, who was greatly impressed with Learned’s technical ability, as well as J.M. Boswell and Mark Tinsky. All three had a considerable influence on Learned’s work, though it’s clear from the pipes themselves that he carved his own path.
This one, for example is one of Learned’s favored shapes, the hawkbill, and wears his signature, stony rustication. As an example of one of his higher-grade pieces, it earned the “Crescent” (i.e., moon) designation.
The condition is very good. Some minor rim darkening.
