Marek Kando Smooth Wide Shank Bulldog w/Horn Estate Briar Pipe, Other Estates
Out of stock
Description
So called “wide shank bulldog,” or “surfing bulldog” shapes have become a staple among artisan pipe makers, especially in Europe’s central and eastern regions. Slovakia’s Marek Kando is one artisan whose portfolio is filled with variations on such a theme. Unlike his Czech counterparts however, such as Biftek, Cermak, or Eclesias, his renditions are not as indebted to the Ukulele designs of Sixten Ivarsson, or the Eskimo (or Inuit) designs of Ed Burak and Tom Eltang. Instead, Kando’s use of facets has his pipes far more akin to those of Poul Ilsted, along with Manduela and others in the “Svendborg school.” This particular wide shank bulldog certainly has an “Ilstedian” bent to it, though its more assertive forward face and compact, pocket friendly proportions show Kando clearly charting his own path.
The condition is great. Slightly faded stamping and very minor wear to the horn accent.
