Kaywoodie Ruf-Tone Partially Rusticated Straight Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked [SOLD OUT]

Description

Kaywoodie pipes are as American as apple pie. Starting in 1919 as a pipe brand for KB&B, a pipe shop dating all the way back to 1851, Kaywoodie has since then been a staple of American-made pipes. In the present, many Kaywoodies are collectors’ items, in addition to being fantastic smokers.

Something about this particular Kaywoodie just fascinates me. Normally, I’m a sucker for smooth or sandblasted pipes, but the unique ‘rustication’ – if that word even suffices here – keeps me coming back just to gaze at it. While this Kaywoodie appears to be of recent production (though dating Kaywoodies is by no means exact nor easy), the style of rustication is very traditionally American, with other prominent examples being the deep grooves that Custom-Bilt brought to fame. What I like about this pipe, however, is that the grooves added by the rustication augment the general shape of the pipe, giving the bowl an interesting geometry and adding a distinct flair to the shank. It’s a fairly long pipe, but not especially heavy, meaning a veteran clencher could probably keep it between their teeth if they wanted to. It’s also completely unsmoked, leaving the next owner to be the one to take it on its maiden voyage.

As the pictures indicate – and as is typical for Kaywoodies – this pipe has a threaded, metal tenon and mortise, along with the iconic Kaywoodie stinger.
