Description
Kaywoodie pipes are as American as apple pie. Starting in 1919 as a pipe brand for KB&B, a pipe shop dating all the way back to 1851, Kaywoodie has since then been a staple of American-made pipes. In the present, many Kaywoodies are collectors’ items, in addition to being fantastic smokers.
Though stamped simply as “Handmade”, this particular Kaywoodie belongs to the “Oversize” family of Kaywoodie’s output. Originally debuting in the 1930s, such pipes were, as the name implies, larger than the average Kaywoodie, though that is relative to mid-century standards, back when pipes were, on average, much smaller. This one is certainly a hefty pot, however, rusticated in Kaywoodie’s “Hand-Carved” finish that I would imagine was intended to emulate the very popular Custom-Bilt aesthetic. As for the shape, Kaywoodie’s Oversize pipes were made to certain specifications in the form of a loose shape chart, having names such as “Atlas” and “Colossus,” though I haven’t been able to find this one’s name. Nevertheless, it is a good one, taking the form of an opera/panel hybrid, albeit with a conical chamber, not unlike the shape 44 Castello produces.
The condition is good. Some minor charring of the inner rim and slight handling marks. Note that this Oversize has a push tenon, rather than a Drinkless stinger and Synchro-Stem threaded fitment.
