Description

Martin Paljesek – known professionally as Jesek – is a artisan pipe-maker from Nová Dubnica, in the western region of Slovakia. Beginning his pipe-making career in 2010, Paljesek is good friends with the Czech artisan Jiří Maczko of Biftek fame, whose guidance aided Paljesek’s early development. Jesek Pipes would subsequently go on to receive similar renown to those of Biftek, with the two helping to draw attention to the contemporary scene of high-grade pipe-making in Europe’s eastern nations.

This is a curious pipe from Martin Paljesek. Shape-wise, it has many of the hallmarks of a Danish ‘scoop,’ with its squat bowl and low slung curve from button to chamber. What’s most interesting is that the pipe appears to be both sandblasted and rusticated, or rather sandblasted then rusticated. The shank has been more intensely carved, with a moss-like maze of ridges and valleys. The bowl, on the other hand, has been scored to give it a stone-like appearance. It’s a beautiful mixture of techniques, and something quite different to your average artisan pipe.

The condition is pristine. The stem is free from abrasions or indentations, the finish still has its sheen, and even the inner lip of the rim – left smooth polished by Paljesek – is without darkening. I don’t think this pipe has been smoked much at all.
