HS Studio Sandblasted Long Shank Acorn w/ Plateaux Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

If you’ve been keeping up with the world of Chinese pipe making, their artisan scene has been really taking off over the last decade. Like the great Danish institutions of old, many of these pipes are produced in artisan workshops such as Zhiputang, Qi Studio, and GH Zhang. Hong Kong’s HS Studio follows a similar model, with a team of expert in-house carvers crafting high-quality briars in a variety of styles.

I’ve mentioned before about how a few of the HS Studio pipe’s we’ve had come through have owed a great debt—as so many artisan pipes do today—to the designs of the late, great Lars Ivarsson. This one has a similarly Ivarssonian aspect to it, though it is also much more contemporary. It is exceedingly long and more slender than a typical Lars, instead evoking the some of the designs of Todd Johnson (a Lars disciple and friend), Abe Herbaugh, or Ping Zhan. This one keeps its shaping and finishing relatively reserved, though it nevertheless shows off a great, consistent, ring grain blast, and features an eruption of plateaux burl at its shank end.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
