Description
Pavel Holub’s Eclesias make is part of what might be called the “new Czech scene” in artisan pipe making. Like his compatriots Jirí Maczko (Biftek) and Martin Cermak, Holub is one of a number of pipe makers from the Czech Republic who have carved a distinct niche in today’s competitive, worldwide community of solo carvers trying to make a name for themselves—and, indeed, to show that high-grade pipes are not exclusive to Scandinavia, the United States, or Japan. And Holub has become very successful at it, having attained the status of a cult favorite for his eclectic mix of traditional, Scandinavian, and post-Scandinavian designs.
This particular pipe from Holub is an interesting rendition of a Scandinavian staple, the acorn. More slender and subdued than the renditions of say, Lars Ivarsson, or the “fig” variations of Adam Davidson, the pipe features a lightly applied sandblast, a near-naked finish, and a hand-cut black acrylic stem.
