Description
With its origins in an 1858 collaboration between Jean-Baptiste Choquin and Gustave Butz, Butz-Choquin ultimately become one of the premier smoking pipe companies in 20th century France. The brand is known both for its stylish variations on traditional English-French shapes and for its exploration of atypical and elaborate finishes. The brand is also known for its collaborations with celebrated French pipe-makers, such as Paul Lanier and Alain Albuisson, who made some of Butz-Choquin’s highest-grade pipes for the company.
While this is certainly a Butz-Choquin pipe, it isn’t stamped with the usual nomenclature, merely having the make’s “BC” logo inlaid in its stem. I’m not sure why that is, but thankfully, I do know from memory what model it is. This would be Butz-Choquin’s D’Artagnan, named for Dumas’ famous musketeer and, fittingly, rendered in the shape of a quite traditional cavalier, including the shape’s signature moisture trap and removable “foot.” As with the D’Artagnan pipes in general, it’s a beautiful piece, with this one’s bowl simply covered in birds’-eye, laid bare by a light, natural finish.
This pipe is also completely unsmoked.
