Description

Bari was a pipe company founded in Kolding, Denmark, in 1950. Along with Stanwell, Bari was one of the first companies that started the Danish movement in pipe-making, offering innovative designs and propelling its founders and carvers into celebrity status within the pipe world. Bari’s founder was Viggo Nielsen, whose sons Kai Nielsen and Jørgen Nielsen joined him in working at Bari, along with other soon-to-be famous names such as Åge Bogelund. Though the Bari company is long gone, its legacy lives on in the artisan pipe scene as it exists today.

It’s always great to see a genuine Danish freehand from a genuine Danish master. But which master made this one? It is a Bari pipe, of course, but many pipe-makers worked for the Bari company over the year. And yet this pipe is a departure from the more organic stylings of many Bari pipes. If you’re familiar with Viggo Nielsen, Bari’s founder, you might notice – as I do – similarities to some of Viggo’s pipes made under his own name. It’s a skillfully carved freehand, with an interesting, paneled approach to the shaping of the bowl; this approach clearly paid off when it came to the grain too, as the sides of the pipe show off excellent, tight straight grain and flame grain patterns. Though I can’t say for sure, I have my suspicions that this pipe was carved by Viggo himself. In any case, it is certainly one that exemplifies just what freehand pipe shaping can do.

The condition is excellent. It’s wonderfully preserved, with just a small amount of darkening on the inner lip of the pipe’s plateau rim.
